Arizona State University - Online Business Analytics Programs
The W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University (ASU) offers two online business analytics programs: a Master of Science in Business Analytics (MS-BA), and a Bachelor of Science in Business Data Analytics. The master’s program encompasses 30 credit hours of coursework, with training geared toward the practical applications of business analytics. Students learn how to use quantitative modeling tools and computer technologies to forecast demand, manage supply chains, track inventory, optimize efficiency, and provide integrated predictive analyses of key business factors like market share and consumer behavior. The program is designed for full-time enrollment, and can be completed in 16 months.
The bachelor’s program is the equivalent of a four-year undergraduate degree with a major in business analytics. Students must complete 120 credit hours of coursework, including a general education core, and targeted classes that cover competencies in data mining, data warehousing, predictive analytics, and big data analytics for business and government. In the undergraduate program, students have the option of attending full-time or part-time. Students may also be able to transfer existing college credits into the program, which can reduce the time to completion.
ASU’s online master’s and bachelor’s programs are designed to accommodate business professionals and others who may have significant commitments outside of school. The courses utilize asynchronous instruction, which allows students to access pre-recorded lectures and other materials at any time through the W. P. Carey School’s online learning platform. The master’s program begins in January, with an on-campus orientation session that all students are required to attend. Students then complete one class per five-week session, each of which counts toward three of the 30 credits required for graduation. The bachelor’s program is 100% online, allows more flexibility in terms of course load per session, and does not require any campus visits. It admits new students twice a year, in the fall and in the spring.
The MS-BA curriculum begins with in-depth coursework in Enterprise Analytics and Applied Analytics, providing students with a foundational understanding of how data is collected, managed, and interpreted in a business environment. Students learn about the IT tools that are used to clean and sort data in two courses devoted to Data Mining. They then explore how the tools and technologies of data analytics are used to make crucial business decisions in courses like Data Driven Quality Management, Business Analytics Strategy, and Marketing Analytics. In the final five-week session of the program, students demonstrate their mastery of analytics in an Applied Project class that challenges them to tackle real-world business issues.
The core business analytics major curriculum in the Online Bachelor of Science in Business Data Analytics program integrates coursework from various disciplines, including economics, accounting, mathematics, computer information systems, and business administration. Required courses within the major include: Mathematics for Business Analysis; Uses of Accounting Information I & II; Business Statistics; Business Data Warehouses and Dimensional Modeling; Business Data Mining; Big Data Analytics and Visualization in Business; and Enterprise Analytics. Students in the business analytics major typically also take the following courses: Global Supply Operations; Marketing and Business Performance; Organization and Management Leadership; Problem Solving and Actionable Analytics; Fundamentals of Finance; and Business Law and Ethics for Managers. The general education core includes classes in English composition, natural science, cultural diversity, and communications, as well as general studies electives in psychology, sociology, and the arts and humanities. The program culminates with a W.P. Carey Capstone Course for undergraduates, which explores the applied use of data in the real world of business analytics.
