Stevens Institute of Technology - Online Master of Science in Business Intelligence, Analytics and Data Science Programs
The School of Business at the Stevens Institute of Technology offers an online Master of Science in Business Intelligence and Analytics (MSBIA) degree that focuses on the strategic use of big data and the advanced technologies organizations deploy to extract meaning from that data. The MSBIA program, which includes a concentration in Data Science, targets training in the warehousing, management, and mining of data, as well as in the analytical tools and processes that make that data useful. The MSBIA and the Data Science concentration require students to complete 12 courses, which can be done in 12-16 months by students who choose full-time enrollment (3-4 courses per semester), or 24-48 months by part-time students (1-2 courses per semester).
OnlineEducation.com categorizes the MSBIA program under data analytics, business intelligence, and data science, based on the curricular options available to students.
The online master’s degree programs at Stevens rely primarily on asynchronous instruction, where recorded lectures and other course materials are accessible online and on-demand, but some classes may have a synchronous component in which real-time webinars and class discussion are scheduled at specified times at the discretion of the instructor. Assignments and exams can be completed and submitted through an online learning platform 24/7. Students are not required to visit the campus during the program.
The curriculum for the MSBIA degree and the Data Science concentration are similar, with several variations in advanced coursework. Both are grounded in developing a command of IT data systems, cultivating the organizational leadership and communications skills used in the field, and applying that knowledge to practical problems in the business world. Students take courses in subjects like, Financial Decision Making, Optimization and Process Analytics, Multivariate Data Analytics, Knowledge Discovery in Databases, Social Network Analytics, Marketing Analytics, and Data Stream Analytics. The program culminates with a capstone course in which students use real data to tackle a business analytics problem with guidance from industry mentors. Students in the MSBIA program can also take advantage of the Hanlon Financial Systems Lab at Stevens, which offers the kind of advanced computing power used on Wall Street, and features top-of- the-line database and data management software.
For the Data Science concentration, students work with an advisor to fashion a curriculum that substitutes two-to-four advanced courses in mathematics and computer science for an equal number of classes in the MSBIA program. Some of these courses may not be available online, so distance learning students should confirm in advance that they’ll be able to take specific courses.
