Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in Colorado

There are currently three schools in the state of Colorado offering online master’s degree programs in the field of analytics: Regis University; University of Colorado Boulder; and University of Colorado Denver. Based on the curricula of the programs, OnlineEducation.com classifies the degrees offered by Regis University and University of Colorado Boulder as master’s in data science programs; whereas, University of Colorado Denver’s program is classified as a master’s in business intelligence program. All three of these programs are 100% online and utilize learning management systems that support asynchronous instruction. This means that students have on-demand access to course lectures and other class materials without having to log in at specific times to attend live lectures. Students in these programs are not required to visit the campus during the program.

The College of Computer & Information Sciences at Regis University offers a Master of Science in Data Science program that focuses on the programming skills and IT systems used by data scientists to process and analyze big data. It includes coursework in data engineering, statistical modeling, and the ethics of data collection. There are two practicums built into the curriculum, which give students the opportunity to apply the skills they are learning to real-world data science projects.

The Master’s in Data Science program offered by Regis is structured to accommodate working professionals who have a background in statistics and computer programming. It is designed to be completed in two years, and has six start dates per years, in August, October, January, March, May, and June.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder has an online Master of Science in Computer Science program that offers an emphasis in Data Science and Engineering. The curriculum focuses on the tools data scientists use to build and manage advanced database and knowledge management systems. Students in the Data Science and Engineering track can take classes in subjects like machine learning, data mining, and linear programming.

The University of Colorado Boulder’s online master’s in data science allows for full- or part-time enrollment. Full-time students can expect to complete the program in 16 months; part-time students have up to four-years to finish the degree requirements. The program has three start dates per year, in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

(Note: The University of Colorado Boulder is planning to launch a new online Master of Science in Data Science program in January of 2021. While the school continues to offer its Master of Science in Computer Science program in an online format, potential applicants should contact a program representative regarding the continued availability of the program’s Data Science and Engineering concentration.)

The University of Colorado Denver’s Business School has an online Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) degree program that offers a specialization in Business Intelligence. The MSIS curriculum is based on standards set by the Association for Information Systems and the Association for Computing Machinery. The Business Intelligence specialization includes coursework in financial management, accounting analytics, and the IT systems used in marketing and business management.

Student in the master’s in business intelligence program at the University of Colorado Denver can enroll full-time and graduate in four semesters, or 16 months. Part-time students in the program generally complete the requirements in six semesters, or two years. The MSIS program accepts students for enrollment three times a year, in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

In addition to the three schools in Colorado that offer online master’s in analytics programs, there are currently 74 out-of-state schools that accept applicants from Colorado. These schools offer a total of 93 online master’s programs in data analytics, data science, and business intelligence. This is particularly important for students who are interested in pursuing a program that is more focused on data analytics as opposed to data science or business intelligence. Of the 74 out-of-state schools that accept students from Colorado, 60 are completely online, while 14 require no more than two campus visits per year. In many cases, the tuition costs are the same for in-state and out-of-state online students. However, potential applicants should contact schools regarding tuition costs as some programs do indeed charge higher tuition for out-of-state students.
