There are three schools offering online master’s in analytics programs in the state of Maryland: Johns Hopkins University; Notre Dame of Maryland University; and University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). The program offered by Johns Hopkins University is classified as an online master’s in data science. All three programs are also 100% online, and do not require any campus visits.

Johns Hopkins University offers an online Master of Science in Data Science program through its Whiting School of Engineering (Engineering for Professionals). The data science program draws on the resources of Johns Hopkins Engineering and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, covering core proficiencies in computer science, applied mathematics, and statistical modeling. The program utilizes a learning management system that supports asynchronous instruction, but includes weekly synchronous office hours during which students can meet with instructors.

The MS in Data Science program at Johns Hopkins University Engineering for Professionals is designed for students who have completed prior coursework in Python and Java programming, data structuring, and applied mathematics, or who have the equivalent professional experience. Students can complete the program requirements in 20 months by taking two courses per semester, or in 40 months by taking one course per semester. Johns Hopkins University Engineering has a rolling admission process and accepts applicants throughout the year.

Notre Dame of Maryland University offers an online Master of Science in Analytics degree that targets the skills and technologies used to collect, warehouse, and interpret large and complex datasets. The interdisciplinary curriculum includes coursework in computer science, mathematics, and business management. Classes are taught using an online learning platform that supports asynchronous instruction, which gives students on-demand access to videotaped lectures and other course materials.

The MS in Analytics offered by Notre Dame of Maryland University is designed to accommodate working professionals and others who may have significant commitments outside of school. It is a part-time program that can be completed in two years. The program accepts applicants for six start dates each year.

The online Master of Science in Data Analytics program at UMGC covers core analytics subject areas like data mining, data visualization, data security, and database design and management. The curriculum also includes coursework in predictive modeling and decision management systems, as well as a final Data Analytics Practicum. The program utilizes a learning management system that supports asynchronous instruction.

UMGC’s MS in Data Analytics program is designed for part-time enrollment. Students can typically complete the program requirements, including the applied analytics practicum, in approximately two years. The program begins with an online Orientation to Graduate Studies at UMGC course, which introduces various aspects of the school’s online learning management system. The program currently has five start dates per year.

Students in Maryland also have the option of applying to online master’s in analytics programs offered by schools in other states. Currently, there are 69 out-of-state schools offering a total of 88 online analytics master’s programs that accept applicants from Maryland. This includes online master’s in business intelligence programs, as well as in data analytics and data science. A majority of these programs – 56 out of the 69 – are 100% online, and do not require any campus visits. The other 13 schools have programs that require no more than two campus visits per year.
