Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in South Dakota

There is currently one school in the state of South Dakota offering an online master’s in analytics program: Dakota State University. The online Master of Science in Analytics at Dakota State University is designed to cover the programming, data processing, and interpretive techniques and technologies used by data analytics professions in a range of fields. It includes three concentration options: General Analytics, Healthcare Analytics, and Information Systems. The program is 100% online and does not require any campus visits.

The online MS in Analytics at Dakota State University has three start dates per year, in the fall, spring, and summer. Applicants are required to have prior undergraduate coursework in computer programming, database design, and statistics. The program is designed to accommodate full-time students, who can graduate in four semesters (16 months), as well as part-time students, who have up to five years to complete the program. The online program utilizes a learning management system that supports both synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Some lectures and discussions are held in real-time, and require student to log on at a specific time to participate, while others are recorded so that students can view them on-demand when it is convenient for them.

The master’s in data analytics curriculum at Dakota State University includes six required courses that cover topics like data mining and data warehousing; statistical programming and analysis; and predictive analytics. Students in the General Analytics track take two additional classes in the business and marketing applications of analytics. The Healthcare Analytics track features classes that target the use of data and informatics in the healthcare industry, and the Information Systems track includes training in advanced database systems and programming.

In addition to the program offered by Dakota State University, there are 95 online master’s in analytics programs offered by 76 out-of-state schools that accept candidates from South Dakota. Most of these schools – 62 of the 76 – offer 100% online programs that do not require any campus visits. The other 14 require online students to attend no more than two campus-based sessions per year. These out-of-state programs include online master’s in data science and master’s in business intelligence programs, areas of specialization that are not currently offered by Dakota State University. In many cases, tuition for out-of-state online students is the same as for in-state online students; however, prospective applicants should confirm out-of-state costs with a representative from each program before applying.
