Online Master's in Data Analytics and Data Science Programs in Washington, DC

There are currently three schools offering online master’s in analytics program in Washington, DC: American University, Georgetown University, and Johns Hopkins University. All three of these programs meet OnlineEducation.com’s criteria for online master’s in data analytics programs. The American University program includes two immersion sessions at the school’s DC campus that students are required to attend. The Georgetown program begins with a five-day residency on the university’s DC campus and includes one additional five-day residency at Georgetown. The Johns Hopkins University program is 100% online and does not require any campus visits.

District of Columbia Online Master’s in Analytics Programs

American University’s Kogod School of Business offers a Master of Science in Analytics (Analytics@American) program that gives students the choice of four areas of concentration: Business Foundations, Cybersecurity, Financial Analytics, and Marketing Analytics. The core Analytics@American curriculum focuses on the organizational applications of descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics tools and technologies. In addition to the ten online courses students must complete, the program includes an applied analytics capstone project that takes place during the two on-campus immersion sessions, which last three or four days, and give students the opportunity to meet and interact with faculty and data analytics professionals.

The Analytics@American program utilizes synchronous instruction, which means that lectures and class discussions are streamed live in real time. Students who are enrolled full-time can expect to complete the program in nine months; students who opt for part-time enrollment typically finish in 12-15 months. Analytics@American has four annual start dates, in October, January, April, and July.

Georgetown University’s Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business offers an online Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program that focuses on the application of data analytics tools and technologies to decision making and problem solving in a broad range of business contexts. The program’s curriculum uses case studies in business analytics and real-world datasets to prepare students for the challenges of using big data to improve business management practices and promote evidence-based organizational change.

The online MSBA program offered by Georgetown utilizes synchronous instruction and students enter the program in cohorts. This means that groups of students begin and progress through the part-time program together, taking two courses per seven-week term, attending weekly real-time virtual classes, and graduating as a cohort in 16 months. The program does not require applicants to submit admissions test scores or have prior work experience in business or analytics. It will accept its first cohort of students for a start date in 2021.

The Advanced Academics Programs at Johns Hopkins University, in conjunction with the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, offers an online Master of Science in Government Analytics program with four areas of specialization: Statistical Analysis; Geospatial Analysis; Political Behavior and Policy Analysis; and Public Management. The curriculum includes coursework in statistical modeling, decision-making analytics, and data in public policy, as well an applied analytics capstone project. The MS in Government Analytics program at Johns Hopkins University utilizes asynchronous instruction, which gives students on-demand access to videotapes lectures and other course materials. Some courses may include an occasional real-time online lecture or discussion, at the discretion of the instructor. The program is designed to accommodate students who may already be working in the field of analytics. It can be completed in two years of part-time enrollment. Applicants with two-to-five years of professional experience are preferred, but prior work experience is not a requirement. The program has three annual start dates, in the fall, spring, and summer.

Applicants from the District of Columbia may also want to explore online master’s in analytics program offered by schools in other states. There are currently 70 out-of-state schools offering a total of 89 online master’s programs in data analytics, data science, and business intelligence. Of these schools, 59 have programs that are completely online and that do not require any campus visits. The other 11 schools have programs that meet OnlineEducation.com’s criteria for online master’s degrees but require two or fewer campus visits per year. Tuition costs for these programs are often the same for in-state and out-of-state online students, but potential applicants should contact each school to confirm total tuition costs and university fees.
