University of New Haven Online Master of Healthcare Administration

The University of New Haven (UNH) offers an online Master of Health Administration (MHA) that can be completed in 18 to 24 months, with no campus visits required. A healthcare administration internship capstone experience is included, requiring 150 internship hours and a summary paper.

Offered through the School of Health Sciences, the curriculum focuses on key skills necessary for healthcare leaders, such as statistical analysis, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Courses address major healthcare topics, including organizational management, information systems management, the structure of US healthcare, strategy and innovation, financial management, ethics, law, public health, leadership, and communication.

The UNH MHA curriculum covers the healthcare administration core competencies on the Peregrine learning outcomes assessment. At the beginning of the program, students take the Peregrine assessment to see where they stand. At the end of the program, they repeat the Peregrine assessment to map their progress and ensure they are ready for a career in healthcare administration. The competencies cover communication, relationship management, professionalism, knowledge of the healthcare environment, leadership, and business knowledge and skills.

The online MHA program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). It seeks to prepare graduates for successful leadership and management roles in healthcare organizations. Throughout the curriculum, students will address topics such as organizational climate and culture, healthcare information technology (IT), personal and professional accountability, data analysis, and leadership skills and behavior. Graduates may go on to positions in operations management, healthcare IT, clinical management, operations management, supply chain management, patient care coordination, and insurance.

Online MHA courses are delivered asynchronously through the Blackboard learning management system (LMS). Courses include a variety of learning modalities, including case studies, audio/visual components, projects, assignments, readings, discussion boards, and assessments. UNH follows a student-first approach, coming alongside students for support and to ensure success through enrollment counselors, a transcript team, academic advisors, success coaches, and online faculty support. Additionally, UNH offers career counseling, technical support, and other student services.

All MHA courses are offered each seven-week term and may be taken in any order for maximum flexibility. Designed for full-time working professionals with family or other obligations, the program format includes accelerated seven-week courses and both part-time and full-time options. Start dates land in January, May, and August. The program can be followed in a cohort model or according to individual needs. It can be completed in 18 to 24 months, and students have up to five years.

Applicants to the program should have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. UNH accepts up to six transfer credits and requires no GMAT or GRE scores. Although work experience is not required, a current resume or CV is required. A statement of purpose, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation are required with the application.

The UNH MHA program comprises 36 credits plus 150 internship hours. Students complete 11 core courses and one elective. Core courses include Introduction to the US Healthcare System; Management of Healthcare Organizations; Management Information Systems in Healthcare; Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations; Law and Public Health; Healthcare Ethics; Statistics for Healthcare Managers; Communication in Healthcare; Healthcare Leadership; Strategy and Innovation in Healthcare Organizations; and Healthcare Administration Internship. Elective course choices include Organization and Management of Long-Term Care Facilities; Lean Six Sigma for Healthcare Professionals; Health Analytics; and Project Management in Healthcare.

The University of New Haven is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and the online MHA is accredited through the Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).
